South Sumatra bids for the 2019 Asian Games

Having just finished hosting the biannual 2011 Southeast Asian Games, South Sumatra Governor Alex Nurdin wants the central government to get behind his drive to welcome the 2019 Asian Games to Palembang

Despite scandals and near-misses on venue deadlines, Alex claimed that the 26th SEA Games were a big success for Palembang, which co-hosted the event with Jakarta.

“With the successful event we had in Palembang, I think the central government must dare to accept the offer made by the Olympic Council of Asia, for Indonesia to host the 2019 games,” he said.

The council, which governs the event, has not formally endorsed an Indonesian bid but sports officials have said the country has the council’s backing.

The upcoming 2014 Asian Games will be in Incheon, South Korea.

India, Vietnam and Taiwan have all indicated they will bid for the 2019 event.

Indonesia last hosted the Asian Games in 1962

Alex was adamant that Palembang would be able to improve its facilities and infrastructure to meet the higher standards of the Asian Games, which are the second largest global multi-sports event after the Olympics

Sports Minister Andi Malaranggeng said it was too early to decide whether Indonesia would host the biggest Asian sporting events or not. “There are a lot of matters to consider,” Andi said.
